Firearm marking is no longer a bottleneck for manufacturers, thanks to modern automated laser engraving technologies. Regulations mandate specific identification to be added “in a manner not susceptible to being readily obliterated, altered, or removed,” and laser technology has long proved its superiority in eliminating marking bottlenecks.
Whether your shop specializes in hunting rifles, concealed carry handguns, or firearms for official duty, the ATF inspects your records, audits inventory and enforces compliance with their regulations.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) mandates manufacturers and importers to legibly identify firearms with:
This applies to commercially made, imported, and legally converted firearms alike. All markings must be engraved, cast, or stamped to a minimum depth of 0.003 inches, the serial number and any associated license number must have a print size no smaller than 1/16 inch, and they must be placed in a conspicuous location not susceptible to easy removal.
The ATF is also responsible for licensing individuals and companies engaged in manufacturing, importing, and dealing in firearms. Known as Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs), these entities must comply with the federal firearms laws and regulations, designed to prevent illegal firearms from trafficking and ensure the successful tracing of guns recovered during criminal investigations.
Beyond regulatory marks, laser technology offers gunsmiths endless possibilities for recreational gun customization and decoration. This includes marking logos, family names, crests, design elements, and keepsake messages. A laser-marked logo adds deep personal value to their owners. Lately, aesthetic engraving is witnessing a growing demand among gun enthusiasts, having transitioned from a niche fancy to a new standard. Gunsmiths who offer the option to personalize gain a competitive edge in their market.
